I know I've been meaning to post a trip report here for a few days. To be honest, I’ve been trying to fix a small issue in getting flickr images to display properly in my site with their descriptions. So far i have not had success, but I feel like I’m getting closer to fixing it. Unfortunately its just another one of those issues where trying to something seemingly simple is tough to pull off in Drupal.
So on to the trip report:
I flew out of Columbus on Tuesday. Parking in the red lot at CMH was not as bad as I thought it would be, in fact it was less than 5 minutes to park and take the shuttle to the terminal. I met Dave, my supervisor there and we grabbed a quick bite to eat. We made it though security just fine, even though apparently bumping the metal detector sets it off. The flight down was uneventful; I spent most of it reading the SkyMall Catalog. Dulles International was quite an interesting airport. To get to the main terminal, you have to take these huge bus vehicles called "Mobile Lounges". They are a cross between a bus and a monster truck. Apparently, some of them were designed to drive right up to the planes incase no jetway was available. This was state of the art back in the day. After getting our bags, we realized we had to catch a bus to get our rental car. Apparently no rental car offices are at the main terminal at Dulles.
We picked up the Hyundai Sonata Avis issued us and headed out. After a quick stop at the office, we headed to the hotel. Hyatt Summerfield Herndon gets my stamp of approval! I somehow managed to get the 2-bedroom suite when Dave was given a one bedroom. So I had 2 king beds, 3 LCD TVs, a fireplace, and these neat bathroom heater / vent combination. It was a quite nice place to stay, short of the kind of loud air conditioner.
Herndon, VA is odd, since it really feels busy but doesn’t look like it. To me, it felt like apartment areas, suburbs and commercial office parks were all stacked on top of each other then smashed down to this commercial/suburb feel of an area. Seems like the cost of living is greater too, 1br apartments in the area seemed to start at $1000 to $1200. Personally, its not near the top of my “Places to live” list
The training we had was at least semi-interesting, but what really was cool to see was the GNOC. It’s amazing how much they do out of such a small area. Everyone Dave and I met were very nice and outgoing, making sure our questions were answered. They really made us feel like part of a team. Our third night there, the GNOC communications manager took us out to a local steak place called “Sweetwater Bar and Grill.” It was great; too bad they are only in that area!
We flew back on Friday. The ticketing and terminal areas of Dulles are HUGE! And so are the security lines! Even at an off peak time, we waited in line about 10 min, I would hate to see it on a bad day! Also, terminal B is just as impressive. It reminded me a lot of Detroit Metro, except without the tram to get from one side to the other!
Overall, it was a fun trip, but I was happy to get back home. I do have some pictures posted here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/rombus/ I would post them to the site, but I’m in the process of trying to figure out how to get the captions to show.
