Game Musings

Well, I finally got to play Left4Dead over the weekend. It’s pretty darn fun and a great pickup and play game with friends. Definitely play it co-op though, I could not imagine trying to make it though with the AI players. Also over the weekend Melissa and I finally picked up Wraith of the Lich King for WOW. We have been leveling in Outlands at a pretty good clip, so it was about time. Everything I’ve read says head to Northrend at 68, and since the advice worked out in Outlands, I think we will try it again. As of last weekend we are about 3 and a half levels away from that anyway, so it should not be too long. I’ve also created a Death Knight on the Etrigg server, and trying not to be a Death Knoob. So far, DK has been an interesting class to play, but we will see what it’s like once I get out of the starting area.

Hopefully Melissa and I can slog though the leveling in Northrend pretty quick. We both want to get some Heirloom gear for when Cataclysm comes out. I’m actually pretty excited about it. Old world flying is going to be an awesome change. After seeing how flying in Outland has helped us level, I'm not looking forward to not having it in Northrend. I stand by my statement that this is as close to a “WoW 2” as we are going to see. I think Blizzard has made a smart play in that regard, no nasty splits of the community, and they keep working on what is fundamentally a quality product.

I can’t wait to see more of Star Wars: The Old Republic. I’m cautions though, since in the Developer Walkthrough Videos they said many times they want every battle to feel epic. The problem is I think the battles will become diluted in a way, and battles that are truly supposed to be epic feeling will feel the same as killing a random wamprat. I also wonder where they are going with Space Combat in the game, since BioWare in general has been pretty hush about it. My big fear is that SWTOR will end up being just a glorified multiplayer KOTOR.

I think most of all I want a truly massive MMORPG. I want to take WOW, combine it with EVE: Online for all the business and commerce aspects, and mix all that with a game like X-wing vs Tie Fighter for the space combat aspects. I hope that SWTOR will deliver, but I’m afraid all it might end up being is a star wars version of WOW.

WWU (Weekly WOW Update)

Level wise on all fronts progress has been almost nonexistent due to real life obligations. Jo did help me finish the class quests, and now that there is a stable version of a level guide mod I use, Rombus will get some more play time, probably next week.

Right now on my plate is getting WoW setup to look better on my TV, and write the next two or three sections of the Wei Wu Wei UI Article Series. The next two are going to deal with the limitations of the default UI, then physical layout of controls and wow settings. Of course i still need to polish the first one too.

In more general gaming news, Logitech announced a new Gameboard: Logitech G13 Gameboard. For Wow, I love using a game board like this, and I’ll be curious to see how this one feels compared to my Nostromo Speedpad N52. I like the added buttons and the LCD screen, but some of the positions of the keys concern me until I can actually feel the thing. Granted, at first glance I can see how I would lay out the controls and I think it would work out a little better than my N52. Hopefully they will be out in January.

YAWU (Yet another WOW Update)

So lets get right to it this week,
WOTLK: Once Me and Melissa get to mid 60s on either Lothar or Bal, we will pick it up.

Lothar:

I'm getting ready to play Vordex again. I've been clearing out my banks, Right now I'm looking for a spec (most likely Ret) to play with and see if he can regain my interest

Vosa & Meesabeth are about halfway to 40. They havent been played much this week, but i figure by this weekend we will be 40. Progress has been great!

Balnazzar:

Rombus Still no progress, since i mostly frogot about him for a bit when Melissa started playing. Im still working on finishing up the class quest for an item i want, and once i get it, ill be playing him a bit more often.

Xandrov & Romany are the two newest editions to me and Melissas collections. Xandrov is my BElf Paladin, and Romany is a BElf Mage. Both are pretty low lvl right now, but we will be splitting our time up between Lothar and Balnazzar so hopefully we will level them quite quickly.

Finally, I'm going to be writing a few articles on creating a useful wow UI called Wei Wu Wei and the Art of the WoW UI. Right now its a bit rough, but I'm working on polishing it up before officially posting it, so consider this a bit of a sneak preview. Please comment on it to see if its worth continuing the series.

Wei Wu Wei and the Art of the WoW Ui

Wei Wu Wei is an interesting concept in Taoism. Essentially, in English, it means “Action without Action.” The overall goal of Wei Wu Wei is to act without thinking about the actions itself. From the Wu Wei Wikipedia article :

“The goal for wu wei is to get out of your own way, so to speak. This is like when you are playing an instrument and if you start thinking about playing the instrument, then you will get in your own way and interfere with your own playing. It is aimless action, because if there was a goal that you need to aim at and hit, then you will develop anxiety about this goal.”

The overall goal of the next few articles is to apply Wei Wu Wei to World of Warcraft. In particular, to the UI and how we control it, creating a Wei Wu Wei UI (W^3UI). But first, we should look at two examples of previous implementations of this concept in the digital world.

The first example is a small application for the OSX called QuickSilver . At its core, QuickSilver is nothing more than an application launcher. What makes it different is how it works, You assign it to a key combination of your choosing, and it pops up in a small window on your screen. Type in the name of the program or file your looking for and hit enter and it will open that application or file. As you use it more, it figures out what you use it to open the most, so it will guess what your trying to open as you type.

Of course, there is more to Quicksilver than what I described, but that covers the important part. Using it becomes easy after a day or two, and second nature after a about a week. I’ve used it so much that when it crashes I feel lost without it. This “second nature” feel is the overall goal we want to achieve with the WOW GUI.

The second example actually comes from an older WOW UI idea called “Speed Kills UI”. This UI is what I found back about 2 years ago when I started researching WoW Add-ons. It’s a brilliant concept; all your actions at your fingertips without having to click a single button. The problem is that Speed Kills concept used Discord Mods, which recently have fallen out of favor, due to the learning curve and the lack of updates. You will find that most of my concepts for Wei Wu Wei UI are improvements to concepts laid out by Speed Kills.

It’s important to note that W^3UI is not a specific set of Add-Ons for WoW, but a overall concept to using the WOW UI to our advantage without it getting in the way. The UI needs to be fluid for each class, rather than the rigid UI packs that most people release. During the articles, ill mention specific mods I use, but any mod that you’re comfortable with can be used as long as it has similar functionality. W^3UI can be applied to even the default UI if you so wish!

I’m going to break down the overall concept into a few different articles. The first will be the weaknesses of the default UI and how you control the game. So to prepare to implement W^3UI concepts, I suggest going back to the default UI. Play with it for a few kills, get a feel for the strengths and weaknesses of it. For whatever class you play, study what spells/actions you use. You will most likely find you have a few different groups of spells/actions. There will be ones you need constant access to, ones you use frequently, ones you barely use, and ones you never use. Keep this list; we will use it in a future article.

So what can you expect from Wei Wu Wei UI? With 2 or less key presses I have any action I need to use available to me. I find myself ready for my next action/spell before the Global Cool down Timer ends, so it makes me play faster and cast more effectively. Most of all, once I got used to the changes, I stopped thinking about what keys I needed to hit to perform an action, but what action would be the best to use in the situation. This helps you react quicker to changes in the event.
In short, Wei Wu Wei UI will make you a better, more effective player.

The Weekly WOW update

First, I must admit that Rombus , my PVP warlock, has not been touched since my last update. This is due to a mix of Fable 2 and working on getting Melissa to play WOW. And to that end, ive been quite successful.

She started Meesabeth, a Draenei Mage, and I started Vosa, a Draenei Priest to play right along with her. While I've been more active on Balnazzar lately, i did not want to start her out on a PVP server so we started on Lothar, my old stomping grounds. I’m using the Recruit a Friend system with her, and the bonus XP is amazing. Unless you experience it, it’s hard to imagine leveling at 300% experience. Let me put it like this, /played time is around 14 hours right now for Vosa and Meesabeth and we are lvl 22. That’s an average of a level and a half every hour. Rombus as an example, is lvl 37 and has 79 hours of playtime, averaging half a level per hour. This is with going slow to make sure I teach Melissa how to play a mage. She is doing great!

My only gripe so far is the amount of questing you do in the Draenei starting area. While the quest lines are VERY Fun and a nice change from the classic classes, you’re stuck in a relatively small area for ~20 levels. Hopefully soon we will be moving on to the rest of the world. Since we are leveling so fast, we will probably be creating new characters on Balnazzar too once we get to 60 on Lothar. I dunno what im going to roll next, Maybe ill give Rogue a shot again.
